As I began to wrap up my first year of graduate school here at Teachers College, I sat back and thought about what it was like the past year. I recall the first day of my TC life, walking into campus with nervousness and excitement. Throughout the year, I was adapting to the new school environment, getting to know people from all around the world, and trying to find internships while also balancing my coursework. There are just so many things that I would love to have learned before entering into this experience.
While I still have a year to go, I have already learned so much that I wish I had known when I started. So, if you are about to begin your experience at TC, the following is what I wished I had known in advance and advice to help you maximize it.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Remember, never compare yourself to others! Comparison will only steal your joy and confidence. Everyone comes to TC with different backgrounds and goals. What you need to do is to focus on your own path and what you want to achieve.
Consider Cross-Registration
Did you know that TC students can also cross-register for courses at other Columbia schools? If there is a class outside TC that aligns with your interests or career goals, do not hesitate to take it. It is a unique opportunity to broaden your learning. More information can be found here.
Be Proactive About Internships
Start looking for internships early. Many internship opportunities will be shared through emails, student employment pages, and in-person career fairs at the beginning of the semester. So, please stay tuned! To maximize your chances, keep your resume updated and be ready to engage with your future employers.
Take Advantage of TC’s Resources
As you know, TC offers so many resources like research labs, career services workshops, and more. These are great if you are seeking hands-on experience to develop your skills and strengthen your professional background or if you need assistance polishing your resume. Go check out these open labs and workshops offered by TC offices. You can find more information on TCNEXT or Research labs.
Take Care of Your Mental Health
Grad school can be stressful, whether from academics or work. So, always prioritize self-care. Take time to recharge in whatever way works for you, whether it is therapy, counseling, meditation, or just taking a walk in Riverside Park. More help can be found here.
What you gain from your experience at TC is what you put into it, so embrace the challenge, celebrate the growth, and, last but not least, do not forget to enjoy. It’s a journey that will shape both your professional and personal growth. Go shine! ☀️
